Prevention Programs

· Healthy Relationships Program: A five session, very interactive program for grades 6 – 12 which uses multimedia to discuss the characteristics of a healthy relationship, assertive communication, influence of media on gender expectations, red flags that a relationship is going wrong, actions to help a friend and sexual assault / rape prevention.

· Building Strong Relationships Program: A very powerful program, based on the Stosney curriculum, for men incarcerated at Haynesville Correctional Facility. The program has a 12 to 24 session track for men who are screened to ensure no convictions for domestic or sexual violence but who are at very high risk of relationship violence.

· Child Assault Prevention Program (CAP): A national/international program, established in 1978, which empowers children to aid in preventing their victimization. Children are taught they have rights to be safe, strong and free. They are introduced to strategies of self-assertion, helping friends, asking friends for help and asking trusted adults for help. Each K – 5 classroom receives a 1.5 hour workshop in addition to separate workshops for parents and school staff.

· My Rights Matter!: A very interactive, open group format program which is designed for middle and high school students who have lived or are currently living in a home where domestic or sexual violence is occurring. Sessions focus on respect, self-esteem and rights to be safe, strong, and free. The desired outcomes will contribute to lessening the potential impact of domestic violence to adolescent development. Program is adapted from the Healthy Relationships Program, national programs such as Safe Dates and Men Can Stop Rape and the Building Healthy Relationships Across Virginia Facilitator’s Guild.
