Every Choice Matters (1).png

Foundations of Advocacy is The Haven’s core training designed for new staff, volunteers, community members, and board members to gain a comprehensive introduction to our mission and work. This training provides a foundational understanding of intimate partner violence (IPV) and sexual violence (SV), the barriers survivors face, and the principles of trauma-informed, survivor-centered advocacy.

Through interactive discussions, activities, and an immersive experience, participants explore:

  • The Haven’s history, mission, services, and advocacy philosophy

  • The dynamics of IPV and SV, including myths, facts, and power and control tactics

  • Trauma-informed best practices for supporting survivors

  • The impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and the importance of resilience

  • The many systemic and personal barriers that influence a survivor’s choices

By the end of this training, participants will understand the role of advocacy, recognize the importance of empowerment and choice, and be equipped with the knowledge needed to engage meaningfully in The Haven’s mission to support survivors and end violence in our communities.
